The seminar, coordinated by Prof. Samuele Biondi for Engineering and Geology Department in cooperation with Architecture Department, will trace the history of ideas and innovations that engineers have proposed over nearly one hundred and fifty years to make skyscrapers first feasible and then structurally efficient. The interpretative key of this historical overview is the structural conception of tall buildings and its evolution, marked by ideas, that is, genuine paradigm shifts, in the sense of Thomas Kuhn's theory of scientific revolutions. Engineers, through their ideas, are the protagonists of this story, in which they fully reveal their identity: vision and creativity combined with pragmatism. From this historical reading, several connections emerge, sometimes unexpected, between ideas and engineers, between professional practice and academia, between research and teaching, and between structures and nature.
